Hillcrest-Bruce Mission

Breaking the Cycle of Generational Poverty, One Life at a Time

For more than 50 years, Hillcrest-Bruce Mission has been a source of hope, compassion, and opportunity for individuals and families facing poverty in Ashland, Kentucky. Founded in 1971 through a partnership of local United Methodist churches, the organization began by providing food, clothing, and other necessities to residents of the Hillcrest and Bruce apartment communities.

What started as a small outreach effort has grown into a comprehensive community resource dedicated to addressing the challenges of generational poverty. Today, Hillcrest-Bruce Mission continues its commitment to helping individuals and families overcome barriers, build independence, and create brighter futures.

At the heart of the Mission's work is the understanding that overcoming poverty requires more than meeting immediate needs. While access to food, clothing, and household essentials provides critical relief, lasting change also requires education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and a strong support system.

Through its Basic Needs programs, Hillcrest-Bruce Mission provides food pantry assistance, fresh produce, clothing, hygiene products, diapers, household supplies, and other essential resources. Seasonal initiatives, including Thanksgiving food baskets and Christmas assistance programs, provide additional support to families during times of increased financial pressure.

The Mission also recognizes that access to healthcare can be a significant barrier for individuals experiencing financial hardship. Its Healthy Living Program helps connect community members with essential services, including vision exams and glasses, dental care and dentures, and hearing assistance. Additional programs focused on nutrition, recovery, counseling, and wellness help address the physical and emotional challenges that can make achieving stability more difficult.

Beyond immediate assistance, Hillcrest-Bruce Mission places a strong emphasis on education, career readiness, and long-term self-sufficiency. Through GED classes, tutoring, financial literacy education, college application assistance, job search support, and workforce preparation, the organization helps individuals develop the tools and confidence needed to pursue meaningful employment and financial independence.

These services work together to create pathways toward lasting change. For someone struggling to make ends meet, a food box may provide immediate relief, while educational opportunities, healthcare assistance, and employment resources can help build a more secure future.

As a funded partner of United Way of Northeast Kentucky, Hillcrest-Bruce Mission plays an important role in strengthening our community through essential needs, education, empowerment, and employability. Its commitment to meeting people where they are reflects the belief that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

Through the dedication of staff, volunteers, churches, and community supporters, Hillcrest-Bruce Mission continues to help neighbors move beyond immediate hardship and toward greater stability, independence, and hope.
